Isla San Lucas, located in the Gulf of Nicoya just 10 minutes from Puntarenas, housed some of the worst criminals in Costa Rican history since 1873. You’ll receive a historical guided tour led by locals specializing in the island's history. During the tour, you'll explore the cells, dungeons, police station, infirmary, and other buildings that made up the old prison facilities. You'll learn about the various transitions the island underwent over different eras, walk along paths over 100 years old while hearing accounts of the worst atrocities committed there. You’ll experience firsthand the lifestyle that dominated San Lucas for many years, and you’ll have the chance to enter most of the cells, which still bear graffiti and drawings made by inmates—silent witnesses to the many stories lived there.

Additionally, this tour will allow you to spot local flora and fauna such as dolphins, white-tailed deer, raccoons, armadillos, seabirds, white ibis, frigatebirds, American pelicans, cormorants, and laughing gulls, as well as a variety of invertebrates like arthropods, among others. The dominant vegetation is the Dry Tropical Forest (secondary forest), where you might find tree species such as pochote, cedar, and ceiba.
